Two professors and five students from St. John's College in Minnesota spent three weeks working with the children and adults in the community of Yambiro.  Sports, art, health and community pride were emphasized.  Everyone had a good time!

Lic. José Manuela performs an ancient Andean Indigenous ceremony to mark the end of another successful year for the Yambiro child care program.  Materials are presented throughout the year by the Ali Shungu Foundation and the U33 foundation.

Reenacting Ancient Rituals

The children of Yambiro spent a day of their vacation painting several buildings of the village school.  Painting materials were provided by the Ali Shungu Foundation and ice cream for all was provided by St. John's college of Minnesota.

The Children of Yambiro Paint the School

Thanks to the support of Global Goods of Maynard, Massachusetts, over 65 students of the Yambiro grade school received free schools supplies.   Though registration is now free, school supplies are very expensive.  Thank you Jacquie and Linda!

School Supplies for the Students of Yambiro

Heavy rain and flooding during the last week have killed 5 and left almost one hundred homeless in our villages.  We received help from many, especially from participants of the Ecuador expat exchange forum.  The future of these folks is now in the hands of the government.

Tragedy in the Andes:  April 2011

Many, many thanks to Paul and Markay Auen and their sons, Patrick and Anthony for bringing down suitcases loaded with baby clothes and school supplies for the community.  Baby clothing is very expensive and of very poor quality so these pieces will receive plenty of use!

Travelers bring Babyclothes and School Supplies

Many, many more thanks to Mary Ann Clonts and her sisters who spent months accumulating not only used clothing but also school supplies for the children of our community, Yambiro. School supplies are also expensive, especially for parents with two or three or four kids in school.

Many, many thanks to Mary Ann Clonts and her sisters who spent months accumulating used clothing for the babies and preschool children of our community, Yambiro. These pieces of clothing will be passed down to others and recycled many times.

More Babyclothes and School Supplies

The Yambiro Knowledge Center now has 6 computers.  Over 60 students in the Yambiro community have registered for lessons during summer vacation, each receiving 1/2 hour daily.  Typing skills are universally essential in this day and age.

The Ali Shungu Foundation Scholarship program is in its 9th year.  Thanks to the kindness and generosity of several consistent contributors, 29 students receive financial assistance.  Meet them in this video.  It is an investment in the future!

Stephanie Dunning is our first full time volunteer here in Yambiro.  She is working in the school from September 2011 to April 2012, helping the two teachers and teaching English to the children of the village.
